FOUND: 14-year-old girl from Takoma Park

TAKOMA PARK, Md. (WUSA9) -- Police have found a 14-year-old girl who was missing since December 2014. She is safe and in good health, Takoma Park police said.


Detectives in Takoma Park are looking for a missing 14-year-old girl.

Ashley Lemus, 14, was last seen in the 7600 block of Maple Avenue in Takoma Park, Maryland.

She is a black female, 5'2, 105 lbs., brown eyes and black/red hair. She was last seen wearing a black coat, white shoes and black pants.

Anyone who has information about Lemus's whereabouts is asked to contact the Takoma Park Police Department at 301-270-1100 and refer to case #14063816.



Ben Cherington and Kylie Levy of Metropolitan School of the Arts (MSA) Performing Arts Academy of Lorton, Va. and Alexandria, Va. were recently recognized for All-Star Cast by the Virginia Theatre Association Conference for their performances in I Never Saw Another Butterfly. This was the first time Metropolitan School of the Arts had participated in the conference. Metropolitan School of the Arts (MSA) also earned the 2014 Virginia Theatre Association Conference award for Best Costume Design and was recognized for Staging, as well as received an honorable mention for Best Play, I Never Saw Another Butterfly.

Suspect wanted in Takoma Park shooting near 7-Eleven

TAKOMA PARK, Md. (WUSA9) -- Takoma Park Police are searching for a suspect after shots were fired in a 7-Eleven in Takoma Park Friday night, authorities said.

Police responded to the area of Kennwick Avenue and Kirklynn Avenue for the report of shots being fired, police said. The victim was found in the 7-Eleven located in the 1300 block of University Blvd.

The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The victim and a few others were on the sidewalk in the 7800 block of Kirklynn Avenue when a man wearing a ski mask, a red jacket and a reflective white stripe, and black ski pants fired about seven to eight gunshots.

The victim suffered non-life threatening injuries from the incident, police said.

The suspect fled in an unknown direction.

FOUND: 89-year-old man from Takoma Park

TAKOMA PARK, Md. (WUSA9) -- Takoma Park Police have found an 89-year-old man they have been searching for since Sunday.

Philip Wheaton after he never returned home on Sunday. According to police, Wheaton was last seen at approximately 10:30 a.m. Sunday. He was supposed to be heading to a church service in the District of Columbia and he never returned home.

At 10 a.m. Monday, police reported that they found Wheaton safe and in good health.

MISSING: 14-year-old Takoma Park girl

TAKOMA PARK, Md. (WUSA9) -- Police need your help locating a missing Takoma Park girl.

14-year-old Tashanna Lane was last seen in the 8200 block of Houston Court in Takoma Park at 3:15 on October 10th, police said.

Lane is described as a dark-skinned female, about 5'7" tall weighing about 109 pounds. Lane was last seen wearing a black and white cardigan over a black T-shirt, dark blue jeans and black/yellow Jordan shoes. Lan'es hair was braided in a ponytail the last time she was seen .

Anyone who has information about Tashanna Lane's whereabouts is asked to contact the Takoma Park Police Department at 301-270-1100.

Md. police K9 Kota to get vest thanks to Groupon event

TAKOMA PARK, Md. (WUSA9) -- A dog who is part of a local K9 unit will receive a ballistic vest thanks to funds raised from a GROUPON event.

The Takoma Park Police Department announced that more than $335,000 were raised under the "Occasions" campaign for Groupon Grassroots to outfit police K9's with bullet and stab protective vests and K9 Kota will receive a vest thanks to that effort. The campaign from February 15th to March 5th encouraged users to make a $10, tax-deductible donation to go towards buying ballistic vests for police dogs.

According to police, non-profit Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. will be providing over 350 law enforcement dogs nationwide, including Kota, with the vests in memory of K9 Rocco of the Pittsburgh Police Department who sacrificed his life in the line of duty in January 2014. The vests will be embroidered with the sentiment, "In Memory of K9 Rocco, Pittsburgh Bureau of Police."

TRAFFIC ALERT: Takoma Park road closures Oct. 5

TAKOMA PARK, Md. (WUSA9)- The following roads will be closed in from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on October 5 due to the street festival:

  • Columbia Avenue at Pine Avenue
  • Westmoreland at Walnut Avenue/Elm Avenue
  • Carroll Avenue at Philadelphia Avenue (MD 410)
  • Park Avenue at Spruce Avenue
  • Carroll Avenue at Eastern Avenue
  • Laurel Avenue at Eastern Avenue

Maple Avenue will stay open with parking only on the northbound side. Vehicles and transit buses will be able to pass through.

There will be no parking restrictions on the following streets:

  • Tulip Avenue (on both sides of the road between Willow Avenue and Carroll Avenue
  • Southbound side of Maple Avenue from the 7100 block
